Tarot readers love crystals. We all have our favourites, the go to ones we have grown to love and use all the time. There are so many beautiful crystals, its hard to stop collecting them. I have a tray full of them on my dressing table, every type and colour and they look beautiful. They would look even more stunning if there were twice as many and when I DO have twice as many I’ll want three times the amount! It’s just the way it goes! I will never have enough crystals in my life the same as there is never enough chocolate in my life!
Regardless of how many different types of crystals any tarot reader has, there will be a few that they will use with their tarot deck on a daily basis.
Clear quartz is a must have and great for meditation before a reading. I also keep one on top of my deck when it’s not in use. The clear quartz tumble stones are good to pop into your tarot card bag. In fact, I would use a few other crystals to store with my cards, a rose quartz and amethyst are favourites. It’s best to buy a small bag of mixed tumblestones rather than individual ones as it means you have a dozen different stones that you can use for many other situations. If you DO use a tarot bag to store your cards, the draw strings of the bag can have a crystal tied on to each string. These need to be the bead style crystals with a hole through the middle for threading, but it’s a really good way of keeping the crystals in one place and not losing them. This way, they are always there and can’t get lost. You can also sew the crystals into the lining of a tarot bag. Either of these ways means your cards are cleansed at all times.
If you do not keep your cards in a bag, you can put the clear quartz on top of the deck instead. I do this overnight mostly. You can also wear a bracelet or necklace with the stones in.
Amethyst is a beautiful crystal. In it’s raw state it looks quite stunning and varies in colour from pale lilac to deep purple. It was known in ancient times as the stone of sobriety. Used as the crown chakra stone, it helps to purify the mind. It assists to increase intuition so it is a good crystal to use during a tarot reading. It’s also a psychic enhancer. You can buy these as a point, raw or polished and of course it is very popular for jewellery so it’s easy to have it in your reading space whether placed on the table or by wearing it.
Rose quartz is known as the love crystal and linked with relationships. It strengthens the heart. As clients tend to require a reading when they want answers about their relationship, a rose quartz is always a good crystal to have at hand. More often than not, I would have the amethyst and rose quartz in my reading space regardless of who I was reading for. It’s one of the essentials. Rose quartz is the heart chakra. Whether used for healing or tarot reading, this is generally the first crystal purchased by a beginner and I was no exception!
Citrine is a gorgeous stone shining brightly like the sun. It doesn’t need cleansing like other stones. It is purifying. It’s great for clarifying for tarot reading and helps eliminate negativity and enhances concentration. Associated with wealth and success, it’s a fab crystal to have when reading for someone regarding career related matters. Also good for phobias. Yes I have one, frogs! Actually I have two, heights!
Selenite, like citrine, it is a self cleansing stone and will cleanse other stones around it so I always keep a piece of it in with my other crystals. It is Ideal for spiritual work too. For a tarot reading it helps mental clarity and decision making. Leave selenite in any room if you feel it needs clearing of bad energy. It can be purchased as a wand in it’s raw condition or you can get lovely selenite bracelets which are really beautiful and helps to maintain emotional stability.
Black Obsidian has grounding abilities and is used after readings to help clear any negativity. It protects against evil and bad intentions. Occasionally, after a difficult reading, you will need to clear away the bad vibes that can hang around and Black Obsidian acts as a barrier against them. As with most crystals, there are lots of different variations available with this one including raw, polished, pyramid, points, gemstones and carved ornaments. Men tend to wear this as jewellery being a darker colour. This stone is centuries old and was used to make spearheads. This is nothing at all to do with tarot or healing (quite the opposite) but what a fab snippet of information! I know, I spoil you!
Tiger’s Eye is of great benefit to release anxiety. Brilliant for balance and harmony. It allows you to see situations clearly and precisely during a reading. Years ago this stone was used to ward off curses. It is best purchased polished as in it’s raw state it can splinter. It is used in Reiki healing to cleanse the kidneys and stabilise mood swings. Available in a diverse range of stunning colours, even blue!
You will decide for yourself which crystals you prefer to work with. You will no doubt have the usual essential stones in your collection but then you will gather up others along the way that you adore for different reasons. Some will simply be because you are crazy about the colour or look of the crystal and that’s absolutely fine! If they look good, feel great or you feel drawn to them in any way, these are all terrific signs they are the crystals for you.
