The Emperor is number 4 in the tarot deck. He is sitting on a throne made of stone with 4 rams heads, the sign of aries. He has a long white beard depicting an experienced and wise older man. In one hand he has a sceptre and in the other a round orb to represent the world. He oozes confidence and ambition.
The Emperor is a card of authority and stability. He is a father figure. If the Emperor turns up in a reading, it could mean a father figure is going to offer good advice and should be listened to. However the Emperor is also stubborn, a bit stuck in his ways but regardless of that, take any advice offered and move forward with it because it will be the right thing to do.
If this card comes up in a love reading, it will mean that the person has either found a stable and committed partner or they are about to. Don’t be fooled though, the Emperor isn’t Richard Gear and he won’t be sweeping you off your feet and carrying you out of a room while Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warnes sing Up Where We Belong. No. BUT he WILL be loyal and faithful and he will also show a loving side but it’s more about love and security. He’s in it for the long run.
In a career or money reading, this card will mean an opportunity can be coming your way that will be lucrative. Maybe you have a house to sell or you are about to get some inheritance. On a work level, it can mean that a promotion is imminent and that promotion could propel you further up the ladder of your career and ensure a secure future.
Health wise, the Emperor is a lovely card as it generally means that all is well. Reversed, of course, is a different story and it would mean to listen to your body if you are having a few aches and pains or headaches. They will be small things.
I want to mention the Emperor from the Light Seer Tarot deck because he looks quite different from the Emperor in the Rider Waite deck. He looks younger and more relaxed, but he still has all of the Emperor hallmarks and traits. The Light Seers website gives these keywords to describe the Emperor. It says ‘a natural leader, a business person, structure, taking action, calculated risks, boundaries, power and authority. I love the Light Seer’s deck for it’s different angle on the cards and the illustrations are just wonderful.
By contrast to the Light Seer’s Emperor, the Ethereal Visions Illuminated Deck has a fully recognisable Emperor with a long white beard, looking wise and powerful. He is carrying the orb and sceptre and whilst he isn’t sitting on a throne, the rams heads are there in the four corners of the card. Fabulous deck superbly illustrated by Matt Hughes.
In a reverse position, this card means instability. Someone could be bullying you and you will need to stand up to them and take back control. Maybe it’s someone at work? In a relationship? It needs sorting.
I’d love to know which decks are your favourites. DO email me or leave a message. I’m always looking for new decks and there is nothing better than a recommendation!
