The Empress is number 3 in the tarot deck. This strong, beautiful woman oozes feminine power. She embodies mother earth. She sits in a flowing dress adorned with pomegranates. Notice the pomegranate connection to the High Priestess. Remember the pomegranate is a sign of fertility and indeed, the Empress is the card of motherhood. She may or may not be pregnant. The Rider Waite deck doesn’t show and sign of pregnancy, but other decks do. In the Light Seers tarot deck it says “I am ready to give birth to my abundantly rich future”. It depicts the Empress pregnant. It suggests bringing your dreams from the ethereal world and ground them, birth them, share them.
This is the best card in the deck for someone hoping to get pregnant. If it comes up in a reading for someone who is not hoping to have a baby then it can indicate a sister or close friend will become pregnant.
The Empress can be about other ‘growth’ situations too. Not everyone wants to get pregnant! As this is the card of fertility, if someone doesn’t want to get pregnant then they may want to be careful! But it can be about different types of growth. Maybe someone is falling in love, growing their relationship, moving onto the next level.
This card represents creativity of all kinds. Perhaps someone is creative through writing music, playing an instrument, or maybe they are an artist. This card is encouraging them to grow their craft. Regarding career, maybe starting a business selling hand made products is the way forward. It’s telling you that if you have a skill it could be very lucrative so don’t over look it. Notice the full harvest on this card. Everything has grown and the harvest is ready to be gathered in. It’s a card of abundance.
The Empress is a mother figure and nurtures all. This means looking after a wider community, caring for people around you. Not just looking after number one. She is also a lover of nature and the environment. It’s important for the Empress to be at one with nature and as the nurturing mother, to her, all life is important, human, animal and plant. The growth continues in your garden and around you. Care for your garden, grow your own plants and herbs, enjoy nurturing things. Maybe a move to live more rurally is on the cards. This is something I did myself after years of longing to live in the country. If you are thinking about it, let me tell you it is the single, most important thing I ever did in my whole life. I absolutely loved it. It changed everything about me for the better.
In a reverse position, the Empress could indicate an issue with another woman. It could also be advising not to be over maternal. Don’t smother your kids. Are you getting on their nerves? Take a step back, let them have some space.
